Sports massage is a form of soft tissue therapy which is geared toward participants in athletics, sports and those who live an active lifestyle.

It is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for athletic activity and maintain it in optimal condition, and to help athletes recover from workouts and to help facilitate the quality of rehabilitation and exercise for injuries. Sports massage has three basic forms: pre-event massage, post-event massage, and maintenance massage with a mixture of all three being used to help aid in the rehabilitation process depending on what is based suited to each individual.

Sports massage can be useful for all those who wish to give themselves an advantage either in the form of maintenance and injury prevention or as an aid to improve the quality of their own rehab.

Conditions that generally respond well to massage as a complementary therapy include:

  • Muscle strains.
  • Oedema (swelling).
  • Muscle soreness or delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS).
  • Joint strains.
  • Excessive muscle tension
  • Overuse/Repetitive strain injuries
  • Tendinopathy.
